Annual Report 1981-1982
Children from weaker sections got focus in Deepalaya. Children are very happy, they have got a van to come to the school.
The year 1982 was a year of growth when the activities are considered on the cumulative basis. The main activity of the society continued to be running of the Deepalaya School.
Deepalaya School
Under the able management of Mrs. Grace Thomas, Principal of
the School, it is functioning efficiently and meritoriously. For want of spacious accommodation, no expansion could be undertaken beyond Class II. However, during the academic year, depending on the availability of a new premises, it is proposed to start classes upto standard V. The school is not running on loss but has contributed marginally towards the purchase of van.
The strength of the school is given below:
Crèche | 9 | Teachers | 5 including the Principal |
Nursery | 48 | Maid servant | 1 |
Kindergarten | 17 | Rickshaw pullers | 2 |
Class I | 2 | Children using Rickshaw |
31 |
The drop down of students from the year 1981 seems to be due to :
a) lack of accommodation, b) the lack of higher classes above class I. The reputation of the school is good and is well demonstrated when parents approach Public Schools for admission to higher classes.
The active involvement of Mr. Y. Chackochan, the Treasurer in the activities of the school need special mention and appreciation.
School Van
The Mahindra & Mahindra Van (FC 360) which was booked in late 1981 was delivered in December 1982. A loan of Rs.84,000/- was raised from the Federal Bank Ltd for this purpose. The balance was partially mobilised from the income of the School and the income from an annual fete conducted during the year. The balance required is yet to be raised. The body of the van was being built and is expected to be received end of March for utilisation.
Annual Fete
The first ever attempt to conduct a fete was mooted and with the co-operation of members, parents of the Deepalaya School and other friends as well as well wishers, it was a grand success. A sum of Rs. 13,595.72 was collected less expenses through publishing a souvenir, entry tickets and eatables in stalls. A special word of thanks to all the parents, friends and well wishers, who made it a success, which encourages the society to organize itself better for the service of children.
Education Of Children Of Weaker Sections
The concern of the members to provide good education to children from weaker sections was voiced many a time in the various meetings. The attempt to provide books, uniforms and fee concessions to very few students did not really make any dent in the problem. It was found difficult, initially, to integrate the children from weaker sections with those attending the school now. Hence it was felt appropriate to run a parallel school for them. However the financial disability and lack of motivated social worker are the two major bottlenecks, which the society is planning to over come in 1983.
