December the 3rd marked the 20th anniversary of the International Day of People with Disabilities. The Deepalaya Special Unit celebrated the day in their special fashion, with zest and with passion. A celebration of yet another successful year at the Unit, December the 3rd gave the students here a platform to showcase their talent and prove that they are indeed, Differently Abled.

The morning kicked off with a limited overs cricket match. The rules of the game might have been slightly different- catching the ball with one hand after it bounced counted as a catch and if you hit the ball out of the park it wasn’t considered a six, you would be given out- but the game itself was nonetheless exciting.

At the end of this glorious battle, the children from the Special Unit managed to emerge victorious in a closely contested game courtesy a wide on the last ball of the match, sending the Special Unit supporters into a crazed frenzy.

Ability in DisabilityThe game was watched over by esteemed Chief Guest, Sh. Arun Kumar Mirchandani (Chairman and Managing Director, PEC Ltd.) and his wife, Smt. Asha Mirchandani. At the end of the game they got a little more involved as Mr. Mirchandani stepped onto the field himself to face a few deliveries.

Ability in DisabilityThe event continued with the art competition for the primary school children where houses were the primary choice of subject, followed in a close second by flowers. Some children took a while to get going but once they did, inspiration wasn’t hard to come by.

Meanwhile other kids engaged in other activities, a popular choice being musical chairs and the joy mixed with the competitive spirit was evident on their faces as they moved swiftly to Gangnam style.

Ability in DisabilityThe older children participated in a more intricate activity as they stepped inside and got to work on a paper quilling contest,  they were asked to design cards and that they did, quite possibly the most intricate cards one is likely to ever have seen in one’s life.

This was followed by the awards distribution ceremony where all the competition winners were rewarded by the chief guests and even though only a few actually won, Ability in Disabilityall the students were given participation gifts because at the end of the day they were all winners.

All in all, it was yet another wonderful day here at the Deepalaya Foundation.
Deepalya would like to extend its sincere gratitude to  PEC Ltd. for their continued support of the Special Unit along with all other sponsors and donors for their help in enabling the students to move toward a dignified and secure future.
