Malcolm Forbes, [second] publisher of Forbes Magazine, said “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.â€Â This is the essence of what education means to most of us. According to a research on internet, more than 780 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write, and between 94 and 115 million children lack access to public education. To mark a step against this and towards its achievement of providing quality education to the underprivileged, Deepalaya School, Sanjay Colony celebrated International Literacy Day on 8th September, 2010 with élan.“Literacy is being celebrated each and every day at Deepalaya. We are working with first generation learners and even if these children go back and teach their mother and father how to read or write their name, it would be an achievement for us,â€Â commented Ms. Monideepa Roy Chowdhary, Principal of Deepalaya School, Sanjay Colony. She said that Deepalaya recognizes the importance of literacy in the lives of children and adults. During the celebration, some of the students expressed their views on the impact education has made on their lives. Nine year old Nisha said that she wants to teach the underprivileged how to write their name at the least if not more. “My mother is a social entrepreneur with Deepalaya; I too look forward to becoming a teacher in the future in order to enable the lives of many underprivileged,â€Â commented Alka who has been the all rounder of the School. The day had many students coming up and expressing their perceptions and feelings of being literate through their poems. The celebration instilled even more motivation and confidence among the students towards the cause of literacy and the day reflected the sheer hard-work by the organization towards touching the lives of the less privileged. Gandhiji said that every individual in his vision of Independent India has a right to receive education “from the moment of conception to the moment of death.â€Â The question at present is how close is our nation towards achieving 100% literacy and how would you contribute towards providing education to the less privileged?
