It was drizzling that day and Sandeep was stealing vegetables and eatables in Okhla Mandi to satiate his hunger, unaware of a new beginning in his life.
Sandeep is one of the thousand orphan boys in Delhi who loiter in slums, mandis and railway platform, Sandeep an inmate of Deepalaya Children's Homestruggling to have two meals a day. Sandeep lost his mother at a very early age and his alcoholic father never took care of him. He was staying with his grandmother near Okhla Mandi when a social worker brought him to Deepalaya Swagat Kendra. He was gradually transferred to Deepalaya Children Home (DCH) Gusbethi in the year 2006 and was enrolled in Deepalaya School, where he got an opportunity to study. He recently passed his class 12 examinations from Haryana Board.
Like others of his ilk, he too had a dream, a dream that would help him in achieving new heights, where he viewed himself visiting new places and talking to new people. Sandeep has been studying hard during his 9 years of stay at DCH. He didn’t leave any stone unturned to learn English. Then he started learning French from self-help books and dictionaries. At times, he would try some words like ‘bonjourn’ and ‘merci merci’ with some visitors to practice his new-found love for French.
His wishes will soon come true, thanks to Deepalaya’s Scholarship programme, which has helped him in getting admission to ‘The Tourism School, Delhi for one year diploma course for tours and travels. The course shall provide foreign trips and 100% job guarantee. ‘YES! Sandeep now sits in a class bracing himself for the new world that awaits him.
