“When you have an accident, you visit the hospital; on festivals, you go to temples, mosque etc; but if you are facing domestic violence, why don’t you visit the police station or court?â€Â was what Mr. Manish Yaduvanshi, Secretary of Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) asked the gathering of women at the Valmiki Mandir at Tilak Vihar. The women had come to attend the Legal awareness Camp organized under the aegis of the Samajaik Suvidha with which Deepalaya is partnering since October 2009. Mr. Yadhuvanshi who is also a Judge at the Tees Hazari (West District) Court shared that any women irrespective of caste/creed, able bodied/ challenged having an annual income of less than one lakh has the right to free legal consultation and legal help. He asked the gathering to voice out their problems to the Suvidha Kendra of Deepalaya as they would send an advocate there on a regular basis there. Adding further to this, Ms. Sudha Parthasarthy, Executive Director of Deepalaya elaborated on the programs being offered at the Suvidha Kendra. She shared that she was glad to see an audience that included the youth, the adult and the aged and reemphasised the fact that every women should be aware of their rights and duties. “Such camps are important not only for the women facing abuse, but also for young girls who face all problems of eve teasing and other kinds of harassment,â€Â she commented.After an initial hesitation, the women present, openly shared their individual problems and how the Stree Shakti Suvidha Kendra of Deepalaya had intervened and got them the due redressal . Shaminshared,â€Â my daughter was eve-teased by a boy in the community; hearing her cry my son went and bashed the eve-teaser very hard. The police in-turn heard only the latter’s side of the story and did not punish him. Then I approached the Suvidha Kendra where they counseled me to visit the police station and discuss my grievances. I am glad that I did just that.â€Â 20 year old Rinky Sharma who learns Beauty Culture at the Suvidha Kendra said that , “Initially my parents were reluctant to send for the course, but then the Counselors here convinced my parents that I would have better prospects in the future. They finally agreed , now I can open up my own Beauty Parlor. “ She further added that the legal awareness camp was an eye-opener about the rights she has being a women. Stri-Shakti- Suvidha Kendra is committed to improve the quality of life of the women and empowering especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged sections of the society.
