There is no question on the fact that Health is Wealth, but there are times when we fail to practice this. The Global Hand Washing Day serves as a reminder to all to take basic preventive measure to protect ourselves from various infections. Students of the learning centres at Deepalaya’s East Delhi Project (Patparganj and Kalyan Puri) carried out a rally and celebrated the Global Hand Wash Day on 15th October, 2010. The rally indeed managed to grab a lot of eye-balls and made people come out of their houses to ask questions to the staff and students about the rally. Deepalaya carried out a similar rally across different project locations in Delhi, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
“Haath ki safai apnao, bimariyo ko dur bhagaoâ€Â, “Haatho main rakhana ho dum to kitanoo karo kumâ€Â and many more slogans echoed in the slum cluster on the occasion. Children were very excited about the event and felt proud to be the part of such campaign. One of the community resident, Ms. Geeta said, “The students are showcasing a very impressive campaign and it is good that at least the children are aware about washing hands.â€Â She also added that prevention is better than cure as the root cause of almost any disease is eating food without washing our hands properly. Deepak, a student from the learning centre commented, “It was great to carry out a campaign like this in my neighbourhood and I will give this message to many others after this rally too.â€Â The students pledged that they will spread this message further to their friends and neighbours and would religiously follow it themselves too. At Kalyanpuri a unique way of spreading awareness of washing hands was done whereby a puppet show was organised and one of the teachers took this initiative of conveying this message successfully to children by showcasing her skills of storytelling via puppet.
At the Gender Resource Centre (GRC), West Delhi of Deepalaya, a drawing and slogan making competition for children between the age group of 6 to 14 yrs was organized. More than 70 children from the vicinity participated in the program. Entries were judged on the basis of their thought content and presentation and the prizes were announced for best three entries in each category. The prizes were distributed by Ms. Usha Katyani CDPO from Dept. of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India. She also spoke to the children and encouraged them on washing their hands properly with soap before eating. At Deepalaya Uttrakhand, three interesting activities were organized like Poster Competition, Skill Hand Wash Competition and Quiz Competition was organized and the students participated with full enthusiasm and vigor.
