Going the eco-friendly way
‘Nothing compares with the simple pleasure of a bike ride’
Keeping this in mind, the South African High Commission donated 50 bicycles to students of Deepalaya in a ceremony on 3rd August 2011 at Deepalaya School Sanjay Colony. The cycles were donated as part of a commitment of the High Commission to promote the teachings of Nelson Mandela as well as to promote an environment friendly healthy way of living among the children of Deepalaya. The function was graced by High Commissioner, Minister Counsellor and other dignitaries.
“I am very happy to promote the teachings of Nelson Mandela among the young students of Deepalaya. Let us make it a goal to reach out to every child of India and preach the message of peace. The legacy of Nelson Mandela still continues and is far beyond the donation of these cycles”, said HE Rev Harris Majeke, High Commissioner.
Speaking on the occasion T.K.Mathew, Secretary and Chief Executive, Deepalaya said, “ I am happy and feel proud for being the first NGO in Delhi to be associated with the peaceful and equality teachings of Nelson Mandela. I hope that the donation of these cycles will motivate the students to remember the teachings of Nelson Mandela and they practice it in their life.”
The ceremony was a fun filled one with various dance and singing performances by the students. The High Commissioner and Minister Counsellor were so impressed by the performances of the kids that they too joined the young ones and tapped their feet on the melodious lines of ‘Mera Naam Chinchin choo’ song. The dignitaries were also captivated by the atmosphere of the school and the enthusiasm of the children. The guests interacted with the students and took keen interest and met children from Deepalaya’s special unit.
The students were also cheerful and delighted to get the cycles. “I am very happy to get the cycle. Now I will use it daily to come to school”, said Shilpi, a student of Class VIII at RJRND School.
