What is the best time for learning politics & nuances of democracy? Undoubtedly, School can be one such place.

For the first time in the history of Deepalaya School, Kalkaji Extension, election for various students’ posts was held on 24 April 2015. The school has created ministries — Home, cultural, sports and Environment. 46 students (2 each from class V to XII) competed for 15 posts, including ministers heading each ministry,

officials assisting the ministers, head boy and head girl. 11 students volunteered for activities like checking the electoral rolls, explaining ballot paper and guided students about the way a vote has to be casted. 165 electorate comprising of students and teachers casted their vote.

The process took a few weeks involving filing of nomination papers, campaigning, “know your candidate” process and arranging ballot boxes and culminated with an investitures ceremony held on 28 April 2015. The occasion was graced by the presence of Brig Dr. S S. Anand, Former Dean and professor of Radiology as the chief guest. Mr. T.K. Mathew administered the oath to the newly elected members. From nomination to the declaration of results, a replica of the election

process being followed in the country was used. The elected ministers will meet twice a month and parliamentary proceedings shall take place once a month to discuss various school issues. Students were very enthusiastic about the new process. Let’s see how these young parliamentarians promote democracy in the organization.
