Whenever she saw her brother getting ready for School, eight year old Babita cherished the idea of going to the School too. The story is quite similar for many girl children across the country. Babita’s parents were always reluctant to send her to School and in turn forced her to do the work at home. But, with the sheer motivation of the teachers at Deepalaya School, Gole Kuan, her parents reluctantly agreed to send her to School. It was only a few months back when they didn’t have the money to pay the examination fees of their youngest son. Coincidently, the same day Babita won a prize money for standing second in her class. With the same prize money, her parents paid the fees of their son. That was the day when they realized her true worth! To mark the prominent role of girls in our society, on 24th September 2010, Deepalaya celebrated the International Girl Child Day. “At Deepalaya, we try to make everyday a girl child day and we believe that girls are no less than boys in any field,” commented Ms. Poonam Thakur, Principal of Deepalaya School Gole Kuan. On the occasion, the students enacted the role of women in different fields. From Jhansi Ki Rani to Aishwarya Rai, the students didn’t leave any field. Adding a cherry on the cake were the mothers who had especially come to motivate their daughters who were performing and to share about their positive association with Deepalaya. Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension too involved the children and their parents to be part of the day. “Every parent should understand the importance of having a girl child. We try to motivate the parents and tell them that both their son and daughter are equal,” shared Ms. Anita Sahwney, Principal of the School. The School had some skits which portrayed the present status of girls in underprivileged families which definitely made the audience emotional. Besides this, Bablu, a student of the School who was witnessing the whole act, came forward and commented, “Even I have a sister and I would too want her to become a professional in future. In the School as well, there are girls who are doing well and we boys are proud of them.” It is rightly said that when you educate a GIRL you end up educating the entire FAMILY.
