Each year for the last 15 years, my family and I have written and recorded a Christmas song, giving it out on CD to friends and family as our “Musical Christmas Card”. We’ve been doing it since 2006 when our (now teenage) kids were babies. This year, for the first time, we’ve made the songs available on Spotify, Amazon, Apple, and Deezer - and we’re donating every penny earned from their streams and downloads to charities across the world.
Deepalaya is one of those charities, and every penny raised by people listening to our song Christmas Everywhere will go directly to the organisation. It’s a sweet song written by our daughter when she was 8-years old (she’s now 15)! So very much written from the eyes of a little child waiting for Christmas to come. We’ve chosen Deepalaya as my wife’s grandparents lived in India (and my mother-in-law was born in Calcutta), until they moved to the U.K. in the 1950s. Before they passed away, my wife’s grandparents supported Deepalaya. Now we want to continue that support through the next generations.
I work in Communications and my wife is the boss of the house and part-time writer. We're based on the borders of South London and North Surrey in a place called Thames Ditton. There are five of us: Stuart, Natalie, and our teenage kids Will, Amber, and Benji.
Back in the early noughties, the Christmas song had pretty much disappeared. We’d had great Christmas songs in the ’70s and 80’s with the likes of Slade, Shakin’ Stevens, Elton John, and so on. But back at the turn of the millennium, the Christmas number one slot was taken up by the latest X-Factor winner – but it wasn’t a Christmas song. So I decided to write my own and send it to friends and family on a CD instead of a traditional Christmas card. We started with one song back in 2006 and have written, recorded, and produced one every year since then.
We've had our first piece of national newspaper coverage which mentions Deepalaya as one of the charities.
